Are they trying to bring the image of Open Source down?

From this stupid article, Hackers learn from open source, it says that "hackers" are using cvs, the Concurrent Versions System, which is used widely in the open source world to share and manage their malicious codes.

Firstly, they made a very big mistake in that statement, hackers never write malicious codes, those who write malicious codes are called crackers. Since programmers and developers in the open source community often proudly refer themselves or their counterparts as hackers, this mistake might bring down the image of the true contibutors to the free software community.

Secondly, hackers don't learn from the open source development model, they actually created it. Those who need to learn are the crackers.

Thirdly, I would say it is a good thing if those crackers actually share their codes with the world, in that case, those working at the antivirus/anti-malware/anti-phising department will be able to easily peep into their codes and find solutions even before the malwares work. Oh, they don't share their codes with those in the anti-virus sector? Well, too bad... since they say those crackers are learning from the open source development model, I thought that they share with everyone... :P

Just to release my anger towards this type of irresponsible report.

FlashView - A Flash Animation Manager -

FlashView is the first application that I wrote and made public (^▽^) It is a little utility that helps you grab flash files that you viewed in Mozilla Firefox and organise them so that you can view them easily afterwards. Below are some screenshots of FlashView.

YouOS - The possibilities -

Imagine a full OS running inside your web browser.

What do you think?

My first reaction was, "who would need an OS inside a browser?", and "If I had a browser running, then I must have an OS running behind it. So why would I need 2 OSes running at the same time?". However, after I played around with this web operating system for a while, I realized that there might be more than I have thought.

The basic idea behind YouOS is an web-based operating system running on one big virtual machine. Users who log in and use YouOS are thus sharing this virtual machine and its filesystem. Therefore, YouOS implements the idea of sharing from the ground up! It just depends on whether you allow the other users to view/edit your files, whereas the real sharing is done by the OS. Those files are not on your local machine anyway, so you don't have to bother to send your files back and forth, making backups in the process.

Another good thing about YouOS is platform independency. You can access the same interface, the same files and the same environment from any gadgets that you own, be it a real PC, or other handhelds as long as you can run a browser on it.

Of course, as it is stated in the website of YouOS. It is still on an early experimental stage and the goal is still far away. But what is important here is the idea of the web operating system. I think I will register for an account and play around with it for a longer while so that I wouldn't be left behind when everyone else have already got used to it.

One more thing. As it has been happening all the time, there might be more web operating systems like this popping up in the near future. If there is no standard established amongst them, then we will end up where we have started, facing all the problems caused by the differences amongst several platforms, once again.

An old film...

Just watched a movie which you would't believe that I only watched it the first time today. Well, that might not be true since there were a few chances for me to watch it. In fact, this is the third time I rented this movie. I don't know why. But every time there seemed to be something distracting me watching it. Then the rental periods were dued and I had to return it to the video rental shop.

Well, all that aside, it is indeed a very good movie like everybody else said. Although many think that the essence of the movie lies in its ending and if you have known the ending there is no fun watching it, I still think it is good even with the ending known(thanks to a really nice fellow who was kind enough to tell me the ending... don't remember who exactly, though...).

Someone who looks bad-intended might not really want to hurt you. Indeed, they just need some help. They just can't help to look bad. But most of the times we just turn them away, and let them down. I think this is pretty sad. I think I have done this myself many times. I will try to remind myself next time.

And I think you should have guessed what movie that is. If you still don't, I won't tell you the title straight. But I will just tell you its famous line,... "I see dead people...". Those who don't know please google for it and find out the name of the movie and go rent and watch it.

Flower along the road to school

Someone just complained to me last night that I haven't updated my blog for such a long time. Well, have been busy with many things and if I have posted an entry during that time, it would just be full of complaints and frustration :P Now I have finished many of the tasks and finally feel like posting an entry again.



This is the flowers that I saw blooming in front of a house when I walked to school one day. I thought the colour was very attracting to me and therefore I took a photo of them with my handphone. I especially like the fading colours that it showed, not sharp, not outstanding, but beautiful in its own way.

I always find ending a blog entry hard. It is not like I can make a conclusion out of what I have written up there. So... just see you :D Hope the next entry won't take that long again... :P

An unlucky day?

Hi, I am tired. I am tired but feel like posting an entry here. Saw the title? Wonder what have I had today? Hahaha, I kicked a pile of dog's shit on the way back home. Not stepped on but kicked. How often do you kick a pile of dog's shit? Come to think of it, I might not be unlucky but instead quite lucky. Well, it was dark so I couldn't see it. Moral of the story, leave your leg higher from the ground so you don't kick something on the road.

And ya, I am tired now. But sometimes I like the feeling of being tired. Not the tiredness itself but it is the feeling of accomplishment after completing some of the work that makes me feel happy. Although there is still work left, I think it is enough for the day.

Recently I like to listen to the songs from two artists, Norah Jone and Jack Johnson. I knew their songs through a friend of mine so I would like to thank her here. Their songs are really relaxing. Yesterday, and it was a Wednesday, I listened to their songs in the train with all the working people around me, yet I felt like it was a Sunday. :) Check them out if you like relaxing music, too.

A cooking day...

Had my house warming party at my friend's house last night :D Thank you all who have helped and contributed to the party directly and also those who came to the party :)

And today, I cooked again just now. The menu today is the Kimuchi Chicken + Squid's tantacles. I know the name is a bit funny but I don't really know where it should be named, too. But it tastes not bad :) Below is a photo of it. Looks spicy but actually it is not. And see ya.

Hi, I am currently recovering from a minor cold. But I think I will be ok tomorrow.

School starts. Nothing special yet. Just like the same old days.

Went for Hanami(Sakura Seeing) on the past Sunday. Taken a few pictures with my old film-based camera. Quite nice but not as I expected. Since I didn't take any picture of myself with that camera, here are two pictures of me under the Sakura tree taken by my friend's digital camera.
I think it is a controversial topic whether I should smile with teeth shown or hidden. What do you think?

Long time again...

Wow... I don't remember when is the last time I posted a message here :P Sorry about the blank time. It might be a blank time in this blog, but there has been no blank time in my life. Done quite a lot of things in the spring holiday, including moving my room from one building to the next. Well, those are not important things, so let's forget about that.

Today I feel so good! The wheather is fine. The temperature is warm. And the most important thing is that this is the first day of Chinese New Year!!! Although there is not much celebration over here in Japan, I went out with some malaysian friends and had a dinner... then went to karaoke with them last night to celebrate the great event. :)

Another post from the lab.

Recently I have been keeping to a very healthy schedule, waking up at 09:30 and sleeping at around 01:00, until last night. Last night, I worked on my research until 4 in the morning. Although I woke up at 11:00 today, I feel good. Not that I want to say that I feel good because I have had 7 hours of sleep, what I want to tell is that sometimes it is good to break out from a routine. Of course in order to break the routine, you will first have to have a routine.

We always hear people complaining that they are tired of routine work. And we feel good when we can get out of it. So, what I would like to suggest here is, why don't we purposely get ourselves a routine and then delibrately break it? Then we might feel good.

Alright, enough non-sense.

Just read a comparison by CNET between the AMD's dual-core chips and Intel's dual-core chips. I have gained some interest in Intel's since Apple's new iMac and the coming MacBook Pro are using its Core Duo chips, but this article has reminded me about the truth. Go to look for yourself, AMD is certainly the winner. However, there must be a reason why Apple has chosen Intel's. And I think I know the answer. You see. AMD's chips, although powerful, has a bad reputation on energy consumption and heat problems. After experiencing the consequences of these weaknesses with Power PC, I think Apple has made the right choice. However, I think if I am going to buy a desktop, AMD is the sure way to go. On the notebook side, stick with Intel.

Watched 2 movies today...

It is 1:56 in the morning and I should be sleeping now since tomorrow is Monday. But obviously I am not. I was very tired and sleepy just now but now I feel a little refreshed after brushing my teeth and washing my face. The effects won't hang around long I suppose. So this might be a short post.

I watched 2 DVDs in a row today. They are "Batman Begins" and "National Treasures" and I think they are fun to watch. Although not really good but good enough to kill some free time. Before I forget, I would like to mark down two sentences that I like from "Batman Begins":

Just to update...

Haven't updated this blog properly for quite a long time. Just drop by to update you about my life and those things/events that interested me recently.

First of all, I am currently working on the evaluation of the system I have built for my final year project. Then I will have to write my thesis(or report) based on it. There is only one month left and I am still not very sure about how well I can do. But I will try my best :) Fight fight!

Apple always catches me in surprise. They just announced their new Intel Mac recently. Although we all have known and expected that they were going to move on to the Intel platform but I didn't expect they could build the product so quickly. But I love surprises :D Instead of telling people that there will be something nice and ask them to wait, I think it is better to first make the thing. And let's get back to the new Intel Macs. There are currently two products announced, iMac and MacBook Pro(only available in February, though). You can watch the clip of the keynote here. I would like to have a MacBook Pro but it is just too pricy for me at the moment. Let's see if they are going to have a cheaper notebook line like the iBook now.

First, I would like to wish everybody a Happy New Year!!! I have a feeling that this new year will be a better year for all mankind :D And I think this will be a year full of change for me. First of all, I will graduate(hopefully) in March and continue on Master Degree in April. And then last morning my landlord told me that they are going to tear down the building that I am now living and build a new one. So, I have to temporarily move to another building. But since changes always give birth to new things, I am going to face these changes positively :)

And since this is new year, I would like to make new year resolutions:

1. Be more focused and concentrated.


2. Do thing one at a time.


3. Be a smarter consumer.


4. Stop worrying too much.


5. Be more self-motivated.


6. Be nice to the others.

By the way, I went on a snow board trip from 26th December to 30th December 2005. Although we couldn't play much on the day we arrived because of the heavy snow, we managed to enjoy ourselves on the second and the third day. Like usual, I will post the photos on my static website when I have the time.

I am now in my lab having finished the mid-term presentation. Later I am going to take the bus to... (sorry but I forgot the name of the place) to play snow board(play?). So, for sure I am not going to update my blog in these few days but here I want to wish everybody a Happy New Year!!! (too early...) Well, since I will be busy during the end of the year(busy enjoying myself) so I just want to make an early wish. Hope that the coming year will be a better year for all of us :D

Japanese Proficiency Level Test

I just sat for the Japanese Proficiency Level Test Level 1 today. FYI, level 1 is the highest level you can take in this test. Well, what can I say, I haven't actually prepared for it. I would tell you that because I want to know how well I can do without any preparation if you ask. But in fact I just didn't have the time + mood to prepare for it :P

The test is not as easy as I thought, but not extremely hard, too. Just feel a bit nostalgic answering all those questions. I haven't taken a test for language since the time I was learning Japanese 4 years ago. Just made me think about the good old days :D

Well, the test is one thing. The other thing is that it has rained heavily today. And it is very cold. Heard that it will be even colder tomorrow. >Sigh< So I suppose I will spend my whole day in my lab tomorrow.

Wanted to wash clothes but...

I watched "Saw"...

Yeah the title of the movie is "Saw". Not the past tenst of "See" but the tool you use to cut thing. The story is quite scary but not without meaning. Highly recommended. But not for the weak-hearted. Watch only if you have no heart problems.

Have had many activities today. First, I would like to say "Selamat Hari Raya" to my Malay friends. And thanks for the Open House they had today. Nice food! Thanks.

After the Open House, we went to a garden(Bampakku) to take some photos of momiji(red leaves). But unfortunately, the battery of my camera died off halfway so I didn't manage to take many photos.

Then, went to eat sushi(nice food again), doughnuts. And at last watched "Saw".

Didn't mean to report the whole day at first but just feel like writing more.

Just dropping by

Hi, sorry for not posting for almost a month. Just don't feel like writing about anything. Not that now I have something to share but just want to drop a line so that you guys know I am still living fine.

Last night went for a movie called "The Corpse Bride". Quite nice an animation. Very creative and some jokes about death. It is trying to show you that sometimes the deads are much sweeter than the living ones.

Recently I noticed that there are many random advertisements added to my blog here. Well, since I enable the option to let anonymous user post replies to my posts, so I suppose that this is unavoidable. So for the time being, please ignore them. I think it is pretty easy to recognise the ads from the real replies.

Anyway, I am looking for a way to get around this but since I am not that free recently so this may take some time. So please don't be cheated by them.

About OpenDocument

Having waken up earlier than I have planned, I am surfing the web to kill some time. And I have found this article about Microsoft Office's support of the OpenDocument Format(ODF).

As its name implies, ODF is an open format that every applications can adopt. Imagine this, how many times have you got a file that only a proprietary application(something that costs money) can open/save to from your friends, and you have to write back to them to convert the format to another one which you can open with a free software?

If Microsoft is kind enough to implement this ODF into its office suite, then we may be able to use an alternative office suite(which is free) without any worries about incompatibilities. However, There might be a catch behind. Even if they implement ODF into Microsoft Office, we can never be sure whether they will try to manipulate the format once again. (Just look at what have they done with the WWW standards and you will know)

Well, if you also wish to get rid of the lock-down of Microsoft Office, perhaps this is the time for you to download OpenOffice.org(which is totally free! No catch) that supports ODF. But just be careful not to download version 1.1.5. The version that supports ODF is version 2.0 and above. Although it is still in its release canditate(rc) state, I think it is reasonably stable enough for daily use. For the safe bet, perhaps you should wait for one or two months before the official release comes out.

Just something to share. It seems that the other free and open-sourced operating system, OpenBSD, claimed to be one of the most secure OSes on earth, has a release song associated with their every release since 3.0. And many of them are quite nice to listen. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

The different feelings...

When I was in Malaysia, I liked to stay in my house most of the day. Watching TV, DVD, VCD; reading some books, magazines; doing some work I brought back. These seemed to be the most exciting things that I can do, and I really enjoyed doing them. Although the Internet connection back home was a merely 56Kbps dial-up, I did really take the time and read the articles on the web.

When I came back to Japan, I like to stay in my house most of the day, too. But doing basically nothing! Or should I say I am doing too many things, without one being at the satisfying level of accomplishment. Weird, huh? Despite all the resources I have here, I am not so keen on doing what I have been doing back home anymore...

So, what is the moral behind the story? Who knows...

A lot to report...

Wow... the last post was posted before the Graduate School Entrance Exam... and you know what, the result has been announced more than one month. So I did passed the exam and that means I will stay here for another 2 and a half year.

After getting the result, I went on a trip with lecturers, seniors and friends. Right after that trip, I went back to Malaysia. And this morning, I came back to Osaka again. Time is fast. So, use your time wisely. :)

Har... Finally I got over the weekend blues and started studying like normal again. Should think of a way to escape the blues before another weekend comes. :P Any ideas?

Sorry that I forgot about the promise that I would continue to write last night. But never mind, I don't think you care anyway :P

Just now I went to a local electircal store to get a light tube to replace the old one. And naturally I had a look at what softwares they are selling. And I just notice that almost half of the shelves is filled with antivirus softwares. Now I think these company should thank microsoft for its popularity :P

If someone has ever invented a time machine, I have thought of a good way to use! First, you make a hole that connect to the space on the other time on your wall. Then, set the destination time to which it connects a winter time. Then, the cold air would flow throw the hole to your room! With this, you don't need a heater in winter, too!!!

Arrggghh... how brilliant I am.... (_ _!)

To all my busy friends...

I have so many busy friends around me. What about you? Everybody just seems that s/he is so occupied by his/her studies, by his/her work, by whatever s/he is busy with. But why am I always the luckiest one who doesn't "seem" busy at all? Well, I think I am "optimally" busy. Have enough work to keep me busy, yet with a little time left for myself to enjoy my live. Good luck to those busy ones. I hope they will have their rewards for all their hard work :)

Today I would like to talk about the topic "Being Happy". I once told my friend, when he was miserable, that you can be happy anytime when you want to be. Of course he opposed to this idea and thought that I was crazy(Ok, I added this one... :P) But come to think about it, is that actually something that prevent you from being happy all the time? "Being happy" is just a state of your feelings. You feel good. If you insist to be happy, will anything outside you can stop you? Ya, maybe there are. This is a world full of challenges. Challenges that prevent you from being happy. But if you simply insist on being happy. Nothing can stop you :D Just like nothing can help you if you want to feel sad and miserable.

We often hear that one "can't help feeling bad", but I would hope that someday somebody would tell me that, s/he "can't help feeling happy" :D Isn't that nice?

But I am not going to talk about it :D I just decided that I will only write about good things from now on. Writing about bad things only make you feel worse. Agree?

Good thing.. good thing... Oh ya, today I cleaned my room. I don't actually remember when did I clean my room last time. But it makes me feel a lot more comfortable now :D Yaho!

And good thing good thing... Oh ya(again?), I helped a junior with his programming work just now. I think he should try harder to think about it himself, though. So instead of writing it all for him in maybe 20 mins, I made him write his own code and spent about 2 hours with him :D Hahaha, I think I will make a good teacher :D

Ok I lied....

Hi, it is me again... hehehe... missed me? But I didn't actually lied. I was actually busy, and am still busy. Why I made it sound so BIG was that I wanted to let someone know that I am busy, too. So, I hope that the someone has got the message and the someone will never think of a mission for me again. Thanks.

And in this weekend without the someone, I have completed building a website for a school organisation, complete with PHP authentication so a user can just log in and post messages. Something like a blog but not as powerful as one. Well, anyway I learned a new skill and my job of maintaining the website becomes easier with this tool. Good work to myself. And starting from tomorrow, I will spend more time in the library to prepare for my graduate school entrance exams. Good luck to those who are going to sit for it.

I think I made it sound too suspicious with the term "someone", but the one who knows knows, the one who doesn't get it, maybe you don't need to know. But one thing is for sure that this someone is not the someone that you think if you don't simply know the answer...

it is so hot lately in the afternoon, but it cools down at night. I think I am going to be sick if this kind of weather continues. In fact, I don't feel quite well now. Sore throat and some coughing. Going to see the school doctor tomorrow to get some free medicine. (- -!)

Getting busy these days. Need to prepare for the entrance exams of the Graduate school but I haven't got anything done yet. Sigh. But it is much better than last year, though.

Wow a long time again!!!

Sorry for not writing for such a long time. Ya I am still alive :) And everything is fine except my poor little old white scooter... the exhaust pipe got stuck after all these years and the mechanic of the shop told me that it doesn't worth it to repair. So, I got a new one for 55,000 yens. (-_-!) Broke.

Oh ya, I rented the whole series of the LOTR(Lord of the Rings) and watched all 3 episodes in two days!!! I found it quite boring last time when I first watched it. But now I think it is actually quite interesting, if you watch all at the same time, before you forgot the stories of the former episodes.

And... what more... nothing... my life is quite empty... but buzy... So see you next time :)

Wait, I forgot to mention that I bought the whole set of the City Hunter comics at 1,800 yens!!! Cheap cheap... and they are in good condition. I have finished reading them yesterday. Fun.

One month...

It has been one month since I came back to Japan. Somehow I felt that it was longer. But it was just a month. Everything is fine here. Not much problems with studies. Things are like usual. I just write to let you know that everything is fine.

Oh ya, I still have some assignment to do. I have to pass it up tomorrow but I haven't started doing it yet. Anyway, I don't really need the credit, so... But I will try to finish it lah... :) TRY... :P Just now one of my juniors told me that he thinks he is lazy... but now let's see who is the lazier one... :D

Constantine + First week in school + Misc

I watched Constantine last night. Quite a nice movie. It included many elements. It's got humour, phylosophy, action and a little of love. All in all, it worths my money :)

So, after the first week in school, I think I am going to have a good year :) Although I still have to attend classes, I don't really need that many credits so I can really enjoy the lessons without worrying about the credits. No pressure. About the lab, I think I chose the right lab :)) The people are nice. Although the lab is a bit old :P But I feel relaxed with old things :)

Just realized that I keyed in the wrong phone number for a friend. And this troubled her a bit since she couldn't get me when she got lost :P hahaha... sorry...

How true can you be?

Have you ever thought that someone is very nice and you think that s/he is your model in life, from whom you should learn? And you start imitating her/him in every aspect in your life. But since you are not her/him, you struggle to become one.

I have. Although I was not trying to imitate anybody in every aspect, I tried to imitate some characteristics from someone, and others from the other people who I found worth imitating. And it was really hard. Since I would never become exactly as them.

But now, my idea about imitating someone changed. Just because that someone is nice in their way doesn't mean that you will be nice if you have what they have. They are special because they are who they are meant to be. And you are meant to be you. There is no point to act like the others since they are already there and the world doesn't need a copy of them(even the cloning technology can't copy them inside out).

So, just be yourself and someday you may find that someone is trying to imitate you, the one who you think is the worst guy/girl on earth :)

Wow, 4 years!

The new guys arrived in Japan to start their new journeys today morning! Here I wish them good luck with whatever they do here. Although they might not need as much luck as I did and still do. Hehe. I had a dinner with the newcomers and the old guys just now. I was really happy since it has been a really long time since our last gathering :) Hope that we can have more gatherings like this in the coming year. Looking forward to it.

Come to think of it, I have been in Japan for 4 years. What have I got/learned in this 4 years? I can't tell for sure but of course I did improve and learn a lot. Perhaps I am not so good academically, but I think I have spent the years in a useful way. And I hope I can make the correct decisions in the remaining years.

Going to bring the newcomers to Umeda(the centre of Osaka) tomorrow. So see you and Good night :) Sweet dream :)

headache...

The weather here is just too HOT~~~!!! And I had a bad headache because of that today... I hope it will rain in the coming days or I will be... dried...

I met a friend who is going to start working next month. I wish him good luck and all the best! But do you know how it feels when all of your friends are working but you are still studying??? It doesn't feel good... you feel small... you feel childish and you feel like you live in a separate world... Not only those who are in the same year with me are working.. but those who are younger than I am, started to work, too... And they will just tell you that studying is much better than working, blah blah blah... but it is just the same as telling somebody that being single is much better... and what is worse is that these two "advices" apply on me... :-(

But anyway, although I am quite desparate and want to work and have a relationship now, I know this is not a matter of I want it or not. At least I will have to finish my studies first. But there will be another 3 years if I want to acquire a master degree... To go for master or not to go for master has always been my question with a high priority...

On vacation?!?!

Hi, I am in my hometown since 22nd of February. Time passes like lightning. It has been almost 2 weeks since I came down from the plane. It is pretty hot here. I feel like there is fire burning inside me right now!!! Now I miss the winter in Osaka? No way :P But I would be happy if it rains more often here...

It seems that most of my friends are not around. Perhaps they are busy with their work. Many of them have actually started working. Is working in Malaysia fun? I have to ask them when I meet them next time. So that I can make my decision about whether to work in Japan or in Malaysia. What do you think?

Living in a world of limitations

I feel that this is an era of limitations. Sometimes you may feel that something you want to do is not something wrong, they simply don't let you do it. And there are many rules and regulations that tell you that you cannot do something without telling you the reasons. Or even if it does, the reasons may be something ridiculous that you simply can't agree with.

Let's think about this situation: There is this rule, although well known, but broken purposely or inpurposely a thousand(or more) times a day. And what is more interesting is that, even the ones who are supposed to enforce the rules don't accuse anybody who breaks the rules in a normal situation. What is the meaning of having this rule? Shouldn't this rule be reconsidered and changed accordingly?

I have not been the rule maker so perhaps I am a bit naive regarding this. But I think rules should be made with some clear reasons that really have the points. And it should be flexible and adaptive to this ever changing environment. This is especially important in this IT age. Everything changes so fast nowadays.

In the past, since it is impractical to get all the people involved in making decisions regarding rules and regulations, we have representatives, who are supposed to voice out our opinions. However, the situation is much different now with the advent of IT technologies. It may be insecure sometimes, but I think it is practical enough to give everyone a chance to vote for a decision to be made, or send their opinions directly to the authorities.

So, to the rule makers out there: please respect the ones who are supposed to follow the rules you are making, ask their opinions before making any decisions. With this you may get better rules which will be willingly accepted by the majority of people.

Spam & Junk Mail of the day!

Recently I got many mails with titles like this:

"Please help me update my address book"

and this:

"Join XXX's Network".

And I have had enough. Somemore the latter will keep on sending you following requests if you ignore the former mails. Although there is a link(I am not sure but there should be) to stop further invitations, I feel that is very cruel to click on it coz that will make me feel guilty about blocking my friends!

So, please don't simply forward mails or send such invitation mails to friends since it could be a disaster to him/her.

Perhaps somebody may think that this is an easy way to keep in touch but there are actually many other better ways to do this. Just keep this in mind, "Something you enjoy may not be so to someone else".

What do you want?

When was the last time you thought about what you want in life? Perhaps you are happy with your life now, perhaps you are not. Since the world is getting better and better, we(ok, most of us living in the cities) don't have to worry about food, accomodations and other necessities in life anymore. This gives us more time to think. However, I am not very sure if this is a good thing.

Last time when I was a child, everything was so simple. And I always seemed to know what did I want at a specific moment. But not anymore. Life is filled with so many things now and I don't really know which are more important than the others.

Life can be so simple but we tend to make it complicated and difficult. More advancement in sciences and technologies brings us more possibilities. And then more possibilities bring more options and choices. With more choices you need to make more decisions. And I don't think making decisions is something easy. Therefore, most of the time spent everyday is on making decisions. To do or not to do. Do now or do it later. etc etc... And this is quite tiring for me.

I think I am going to cut down the unnecessary in my life and make it simpler this year. Let add this to the list of my New Year's resolution.

OK, although I never put any New Year resolution into practice, I still want to make one this year. I hope I can live with more confidence and more trust in myself, and can make up my mind about what to achieve in my next stage of life :D Emm, sound great.

Back to Mac OS X!

Ok, I tried to install Debian on my iBook for fun during the winter break and I am now back to Mac OS X. You know I actually feel that it gets better every time I reinstall it :P And I just found the OpenOffice.org port to Mac OS X. No longer has to start X before starting OpenOffice.org... Oh, the port is not called OpenOffice.org, instead it is name NeoOffice/J. I thought "J" was for "Japanese" but it is apparently not :D It actually stands for Java. Ya, it uses the Java environment instead of X so it runs almost natively on Mac OS X(the start up time is a bit long... but usable...)

Well, although it is never complete but I would like to write a report on the experience with Debian linux on the iBook(G4/800MHz/318MB RAM/HDD 30GB/ATI Radeon 9200(?) Mobility). It was overall an interesting experience for me. I thought I have learned quite a lot about linux before I started the installation but I was wrong. I spent quite some time on making the "sleep" function to work properly when the lid is close. I recompiled the kernel(2.6.9) after applying Ben's sleep patch #7(thanks Ben :D) and rebooted just to find out that it wouldn't boot correctly complaining that it couldn't find the modules. So I tried to tweak the kernel config in any ways that I know(in fact I don't know many...) but it still didn't work. After a few times of recompilation, I noticed that the default kernel that came with Sarge had some other files(initrd.img, System-Map) other than the kernel image. So I started to study the man page of mkinitrd and finally successfully installed the patch. And it works flawlessly ever since! :)

Other than the above issue, I also managed to get the video-out to work properly. I applied a patch to XFree86 and editted the config file but later I heard that you don't have to patch XFree to get it to work. But anyway this works well, too. There were other small tweaks that took place but I have forgotten most of them. The above 2 issues took the longest time for me.

As a conclusion, though you need to spend some time to configure it to work, most of the functions work as expected and it is fun to install linux on a Macintosh machine. Next time I would like to try out NetBSD but at the moment I will stick to Mac OS X for a while.

The first time I listened to this song was when I was still in junior high school. My sister was(and still is, I guess) a great fan of a band from Hong Kong named Beyond. And this is one of their songs that I like the most. It has since then helped me through many down periods.

Someone may claim that, if you let go of everything, there will never be improvements. But I think the opposite way. Perhaps I am such a pessimist that letting go is the only way to calm me down, thus enabling me to concentrate better.

Recently I have been thinking about the copyrights law and reading a book written by Richard M. Stallman with the title "Free Software, Free Society". I really admire him because he can let go of many things just to uphold his own idea. For those who don't know, he is the man behind the free software movement. Take note that the "free" here doesn't mean "without a fee" as in "free beer", but "free" as in "freedom". They are different, ok? I think I will make mistakes if I try to explain the concepts here, so if you are interested please do a search for "Richard Stallman" and you will find out what kind of world he is trying to pursue.

Up and Down...

I was feeling quite happy last night, and even felt proud about myself since I have completed the compiler and it was approved by my TA(Teaching Assistant) that the compiler has passed all the prepared tests. What I have to do next is just to write the report and pass in. "Since I have been working quite hard these days, so I deserve one day off work", I said to myself and rested the whole night watching variety shows yesterday.

However, there is always down time following the up one. I got a piece of bad news today. The result of the mid-term test of the subject I am retaking(since I failed it last year... :( Do I have to explain this???) was out! And I have got a rather low mark :((( That means I have to aim for near 100 points in the final test... (x x)... >> Sigh <<

And whenever this kind of things happens, I tend to blame myself for many things, like not studying seriously, like spending my time on those foolish and meaningless things, like this and like that. It makes me feel really bad about myself. Is there any way to increase one's self-esteem? If you know one of them please let me know...

But don't worry about me. I will be OK again a few days later. This may be the only best thing about myself. Those some may refer it as "escaping from realities" :P But why not if realities really hurt you bad? OK again don't worry about me. I will be OK again tomorrow since I know there are many people who love me and support me no matter how lousy I am :D Am I right?

Come to think of it, I shouldn't let the bad overshadow the good. It is a fact that I've completed the compiler afterall :D

Wow wow wow...

Wow I think I have been switched into the workaholic mode. I always think of work work work these few days. Stayed back in school late again today, testing my somehow-completed-but-should-be-full-with-bugs compiler. If everything goes as planned, I should be able to start writing the report this weekend ;D

However, another assignment, the experiment, didn't go as well as I expected. But since there are others who are struggling, too. I think I should be ok :)

Another hard coding day...

Phew... the compiler is a bit nearer to completion today. There is only one last feature I have to implement to get it into the next stage: the test phase. I think I will have some hard time again debugging this badly designed compiler :P But I think I should be able to pass in before the deadline :D Thanks to those who are supporting me, directly or indirectly :)

But there is another nightmare, the experiment. I have to design a pipelined processor in this experiment but I still haven't passed the first stage... Luckily the lecturers gave us extra time on it. See how I perform tomorrow.

Anyway, I think I will have some time to relax after completing these two assignments. Then I might format my computer again :P Oh, by the way I am running Debian Sarge now, on both my desktop and iBook G4. I really like it but I feel it is somehow slower than Slackware and FreeBSD. Perhaps it is because of the bloated desktop environments I am using. Although it is always said that linux can run on very old machines, it is not so true nowadays. If you would like to enjoy all the latest technologies, you might need a rather modern machine. FYI, I am running GNOME 2.8 and KDE 3.3 on an Athlon XP 1800+ box and I don't have much complaints about it :D

Eyes strain...

Wow... I have been facing computers too much lately, for completing my compiler. The LOC(lines of code) of all the .c and .h files exceeds 4000 now. Heard from the lecturers that somebody has done the same thing with the LOC of 2000+. I don't know how they have done it but I think I am stupid. So I need to double the lines and the program is still not complete :P

Still wondering should I get a LCD monitor for the sake of my eyes. The price of the 17" seems attractive to me. But it may be a bit luxurious to have such a nice monitor. How should I get rid of the old large CRT if I decided to get one? Questions everywhere.

Anyway, after 31st of Jan I will be a bit more free. Since I should have completed all my reports and passed them up by the time... I hope :)

Getting busy...

School starts tomorrow. And this is how I spent this holiday according to my feeling(I didn't actually measure the time, ok):

50%: Configuring Debian on my desktop and iBook
30%: Going around and play
20%: School work, other activities

Althout I didn't manage to execute my plan to work on my school assignments in the holiday and will have a hard time in the following weeks, I think I have at least made it a meaningful holiday :D

Long time updates

Wow.... When was the last time I posted? I forgot already... There are many things happened since then... that is for sure :D But I am not going to write about all those things but just a little about the present.

It is the long awaited WINTER HOLIDAY!!!! I desperately needed a break from all those daily routine: going to school, doing assignments, reports, report this report that... wow... I have to treasure this holiday to do what I think I should do :) Oh ya, I successfully installed Debian Linux on both my desktop and my iBook.. Debian rocks!!! I love Debian!!!!

And there is a bad news... I think I have to close down the other two blogs, namely the linux blog and the freebsd blog, since I don't think I am going to post there anymore... so from now on I will post all the messages here :) Got it? :P

And another bad news, this is really bad... Earthquake in the north of Sumatra has caused a lot of damages to many countries... I don't know what I should say but personally I think that... we can't stop natural disasters like this one but we can definitely stop wars from happening... hope that we have a better year coming...

I just reached home at around 23:10 just now. Was working at school lab trying to complete the assignments in an experiment. Tired... (_ _!) But finally got it done. I am quite happy with that (^ ^) That means I will not be that late for passing up the assignment(one week late actually, but I think at least 50% of the students couldn't make it to pass up today... Life is tough!)

I finally signed up with friendster last night as have been ignoring the invitations for quite a few times (^ ^!) I think it is a cool idea but my first experience with it was not very good. The server was slow yesterday but I think it is OK now. For those who have an account please try to search for my name and add me.

Just recieved the earliest X'mas card from my family (^ ^) Perhaps it is too early? Anyway, for X'mas, I think I will not go anywhere but sitting in front of the TV set. Perhaps I should go to invite some "lonely souls" to celebrate X'mas with me? Anybody? However, right after X'mas, I am going on a snow board trip (^ ^) Hope that my backside will not be as painful as last two times. Cheers!

Hi, long time no see(?)

Have been disappearing for some time because of the mid-term exam on the coming Tuesday. Although that definitely doesn't mean that I have been studying all the time. Until now I still don't actually adapt to the way of studying here in university. How I miss the days in high school years (- - )

Was looking at some "job-seeking" site. And found out that many companies actually don't care what you have studied in university. So someone from the art stream can enter a technology company and become a programmer there. Amazing, huh? But this is how it works in Japan. They will re-train you once you entered the company. So I was thinking if this applies in Malaysia, too, what would I have chosen, art or science? What about you?

Still thinking whether to go have lunch with friends. And start to study later... any suggestions? :)

I wrote the above phrase under my signature for the last few months. Now I changed it to something else. Just wanted to have something different. Actually, the above phrase is not my idea. S.W.A.T. the movie

I just watched S.W.A.T. just now. And I saw no "W" and "T" in the movie. I only saw a guy who is not so handsome who thinks he is, acting solo. Teamship only can be seen when somebody got shot. Lousy lousy. And I just dun understand why they use a jet instead of an helicopter... someone please enlighten me... :D I was thinking that I could become more energetic after watching an action movie, but it made me feel sleepier... I would rather go for a Jackie Chan movie... :P

A piece of news from Slashdot.org. Microsoft is looking for volunteers to test if their copies of Windows OS are genuine. Microsoft promised total anonymity in this test. They are giving out free softwares for those who help them in this test.

Would you call to a radio DJ to tell him your problems?

You may have known that I am listening to 988.com.my quite often these days. I especially like to listen to a programme on Friday's night. Many people call in and tell the DJ about their problems in their lives and relationships. I like to listen to this programme not because that I actually like it, but it just makes me think. Why are there so many people who worry and think so much about such tiny things. It just makes you laugh sometimes. :D

I am very tired now. I don't know why. Perhaps it is because that I didn't sleep well last night because I left my computer on re-compiling the OpenOffice.org with Java support.

There was a big earthquake in Japan 2 days ago. And there are still small shakes happening up to just now in that area. Hope that this ends soon. The Typhoon No. 24 is coming again... :( Those of you who have never experienced earthquakes or typhoon may think that it is no big deal, but it is actually very scary... So, good luck to all people...

Many of us would like to stick with those who share the same interests, same dreams, same thoughts, same $WHATEVER with them. However, those are just the minority, whereas most of the people living in the world have different interests, different dreams, different thoughts, and different $WHATEVER from you. That is to say, the hint for living a happy and successful life lies in how well you mix with those "different" people but not those "same" people.

One plain colour, though simple and kind to the eyes, is not attractive. Let's make the world more attractive by having a mixture of all colours :D

Otsukaresamadeshita~~~!!!

Just participated the COOP's International Activities Forum 2004 last weekends. And I would like to say "otsukaresamadeshita" to those who went with me. You are the best, guys!!!

And this is about the next activity that we are having next. I am thinking of having some activities with those in Osaka Gaidai. Still thinking about the details so don't ask me for it now....

To those who are sitting for the SPM...

I am not sure if SPM is on the way, but I think it is because I can hear messages from the SPM sitters through 988.com.my, an online radio station of Malaysia. I really like to listen to this station. It makes me feel like I am in Malaysia. OK. This is not what I want to tell the SPM sitters. :P

As your senior, I wish you all good luck. But what I would like to tell you guys is that, SPM is not an end of your education, but just a beginning. No matter how well or how bad you do in SPM, it really means nothing. Nothing ends there. So, do your best!

I got a Gmail account!

Ok, for those of you who don't know what is a Gmail account. It is a web-based mail service provided by Google. It is in its testing phase now so it is not open to the public first. If you want a Gmail account you have to wait until someone with a Gmail account invitation right to invite you. Luckily enough, someone who I don't know invited me :D

Some of its benefit are as follow:
1. 1GB free space!!!! (the biggest point for those of you who like to store everything in your e-mail account :D)
2. New way of organising your mails.
3. You can search through your mails.
4. And more!!! (I haven't found out yet...)

So, drop a mail to me if you want. I may consider inviting you when I get the right to invite :P

The way to stay focused...

Have you ever found yourself in a state that there are too many things you want to do at the same and you don't know where to start? I have, and still do. And I think that is the exact reason that I can't stay focused for long enough. For example, below are the things that I want to do at this very moment while I am writing this post.
1. Write a customized CSS so that my blogs look cooler.
2. Learn how to rip a DVD and encode it properly with FreeBSD.
3. Prepare for the next experiment next week.
4. Prepare for the programming class tomorrow.
5. Think and plan what to say in the forum that I will be joining this coming weekends.
6. Go to school to have my lunch.
7. Make an appointment with my dentist(still hesitating whether to visit him this Thursday)
How can I stay focused with so many things in my mind? Although I understand that I am not a super human and I can only do one thing at one time, it is still easier to understand than to practise. I really miss the days when my life was so simple. I go to school, do homework, read comics/magazines, browse online, chatting with friends, etc. and this is all I "have to" do in one day. Simple, huh? No worries for the future.
I would be glad if you share with me how you keep yourself focused. Till then.
p/s: Oh ya, my friend lost his handphone yesterday "mysteriously", here I hope that he can get over this soon enough.

Stop sending me doc/xls/ppt files!!!

Just feel like complaining about people who always send you a Word/Excel/Powerpoint as if Microsoft is ruling the world now. I think it is a manner to make sure that the recievers can view your file properly, isn't it?

Here are some hints for people who care enough about this issue. (Unfortunately, most people do not...)

1. Use plain text file(.txt) or rich text format(.rtf) unless you need to do fancy things. But most of the time you do not.
2. Convert the files into a PDF file if it is necessary. Actually, there are a few merits to use PDF files. It can be viewed FREE with Adobe Acrobat Reader. Nobody can alternate the contents of your files.

It is that SIMPLE! :)

p.s. Actually there is one best solution but I think ordinary users won't care about this. Anyway, the best solution is to use OpenOffice.org(http://www.openoffice.org/), which is free and is reasonably compatible with MS Office. Try it out!

They think they could bluff me :P

Yesterday afternoon on my way back home from the station, I stopped at the local bookstore for a while. When I left the bookstore, a salesman stopped me and said that they were having lucky draw and showed me a box with small papers inside. Well, the bookstore is big and they looked ok to me. Just for fun, I drew one. By the way, I have no luck of this kind. I never win any prizes in this kind of luck-testing. All I have won were cups, or those things you would not be happy when you got them. You know what I mean.

Back to the story, this salesguy, tore open the little cut of paper I drew from the box. OOoooHhhh! How lucky I was!!! I hit the second prize... But I think there was no sign of excitement in my face, I never believed that life could be that easy. The guy, noticing I was not really excited at all, showed me a catalouge and try to convince me how lucky I was to get the prize. It was a box that you can use it to recieve some kind of radio broadcasting, you can listen to new songs faster than anyone can, and even record it! Wow, that was attracting, I thought to myself but still, nothing more than that.

Then came another salesman, he brought another new "lucky fellow" to draw, so he told the salesguy serving me to move further. So, we did move away from the "lucky" spot! Then the guy kept on with all the amazing stuff this little machine can do, and how much it would cost me if I was to buy it myself. But I was expecting something... (you should know what I was expecting if you are smart enough :P)

As I expected, I could get it free but I HAVE TO SIGN UP WITH A MONTHLY FEE OF ¥5000+!!!! Hahahaha, now I knew why I was so LUCKY... Of course I rejected straight away and left the bookstore as nothing happened. And now I figured out why the other guy would like us to move away... they did not want me to meet the other lucky fellow. :D

Now, be careful of this kind of stupid salesman, don't be happy until you make sure everything is FREE....

hair cut (^_^)

Forget to mention that I had a hair cut today. But nobody will notice when I have hair cut. If I tell my friends that I had a hair cut, they usually reply with, "You look just the same before the hair cut!!!".

G-form...

Every time when a new semester starts, we will have to fill in and pass up a form called G-form to register for the lectures that we want to attend. I often feel so worried when I am filling this form, coz I am afraid that I make mistakes. What if I missed out some important lectures? What if I fill in the wrong codes of the lectures? What if this and what if that?... sigh... I think I worry too much (T T!)

I always think that we have to do something about file sharing. P2P is a great technology if you forget about the bad image of it being the biggest threat to copyrights laws. If it is legalised then most of the problems would be solved. Now come look at this possible solution! I think this is a great idea :D (of course someone would say, "Why must I pay even a dollar if I can do it free now?" Come on, be fair man.)

I suddenly though about this just now. What is a friend to you? Some may think that "Friends should be together all the time", or "Friends share the same interests", or "Friends are always on your side", or "Friends are those whom you go to when you need help and comfort". So, what is a friend to you? I am not telling you my answer coz you may copy it :P Hahaha...

Started playing BioHazard(or Resident Evil) Epi. 1 now

I know this sounds ridiculous but I just bought the first episode of the famous game, BioHazard(this is what it is called in Japan, in other places it is better known as Resident Evil...). I tried to play just now but since it is late and I am those with a weak heart, I think I will save it for tomorrow when my room is brighter :P I think you can guess why I am suddenly so interested in playing the game, yeah, right, it is because of the movie :) I think it is pretty cool. So go and watch! Don't watch pirated VCD, go to a cinema, the sound and visual are far more better!!! :D

Oh ya, just to tell you that I am not so rich to buy a Play Station to play the game. I got the PC version. It is stated on the package that it only runs on windows 95/98. So I asked the sales person in the shop and they said there is no warranty that it runs on windows XP. But it does actually, just if you enable the backward compatibility function in windows XP when you run that game. The moral of the story: Don't trust the sales person if you think you are better than they are in the area! :P In the areas that you are not familiar with, get a friend who is familiar with those areas to help you. Don't trust the sales persons! :D

Review on Terminator 3

I DON'T LIKE IT!!!

The John Connor in Terminator 3 is so bad looking and dumb. The female terminator doesn't look as cool as Arnold or the bad terminator in Terminator 2. Disappointed. And the story is just normal. Nothing special. I wonder if they are going to make the 4th episode.

Btw, my tooth, or the hole where the tooth used to stand on, is still aching.... :(

A horrible holiday... :(

Hello, sorry for the long delay in updating... if anyone is actually reading my blogs... :P

Yeah, I am now having my summer holiday. Actually it is already near the end of the holiday. School starts at 1st of October. Yeah, it is a Friday so I will have another two days to rest once after the school starts. Just wonder why they don't make it the 4th of October which is a Monday...

This is actually both a good holiday and a bad one for me... the good thing is that since we have had our exams before the holiday, I fully enjoyed it without worries about the exams. The bad thing is that, I wasted one week plus of the holiday suffering from a bad cough... so, take good care of yourself. Health is important. And today, just a few days after I recovered from the cough, I got one of my back tooth unplugged!!! Well, it is not as painful as I have expected but now I am having a cold sheet sticking to my chin. Again, go check the condition of your teeth every few months. So that you won't end up like I did.

Today's lessons:
1. Take good care of your health.
2. Take good care of your teeth.
